Federal Highways Administration

The FHWA (Federal Highways Administration) has been gathering data on highway construction and performance beginning in the mid-1980s, including IRI data, a measurement of pavement roughness, commonly used as a marker of pavement quality.  The database was publicly available, but without experience in large database manipulation, was largely unusable for engineers, municipalities, contractors, or other groups interested in pavement selection and long term performance.  Working with our client to understand their needs, we created the IRI Explorer to make an easy, intuitive, statistically robust tool for investigating both the long term performance and environmental impact data previously “hidden” within the FHWA’s database.
